Before any change: paddock, path, planting, structure, run it through six questions first.
Does this slow water down, or speed it on its way off the property?
Will this feed soil life, or just feed the plant standing in front of you?
Does this add a species doing a job, or just one more thing to maintain?
Will you need less bought-in input here next year, or more?
If the weather, the market, or your own time gets harder, does this still hold up?
Would you be proud to hand this decision to whoever farms this land after you?
Answer mostly on the first side of each question, and you are probably moving in the right direction.
