Kōkiri AI Lab – Microcredentials for a Regenerative FutureThe Kōkiri AI Lab is evolving in 2025 to deliver a powerful new learning experience for rangatahi aged 13–16 in Whanganui. Designed in partnership with NZQA-accredited education providers, the Lab will offer microcredential-based programmes that blend cutting-edge technology with real-world problem solving — launching formally from early 2026.
These after-school programmes are delivered one evening per week, over two terms, and offer students the opportunity to gain an NZQA-recognised microcredential in digital technologies, innovation, or sustainable design. Through this process, learners build the skills they need to thrive in a world shaped by artificial intelligence, rapid innovation, and environmental change — not just as consumers of technology, but as designers of a better future.
At Kōkiri AI Lab, students will:
- Build real digital capability: Learn foundational coding, prototyping, and AI literacy by creating hands-on projects using tools like Micro:bits, 3D design software, and generative AI platforms.
- Design for impact: Tackle sustainability, biodiversity, and climate issues through guided design thinking challenges and self-led innovation projects.
- Earn while learning: Work towards NZQA microcredentials through supported portfolio development and mentorship from industry-connected educators.
- Tell their story: Learn to communicate ideas confidently through digital storytelling, websites, video pitches, and community showcases.
These experiences are delivered in a locally developed, purpose-built learning space that puts equity and engagement at the centre. Tamariki will be supported by experienced tutors, access high-quality digital tools, and work on projects that matter to them, all while gaining recognition for their achievements.
The Lab is grounded in the belief that young people learn best by doing. Our programmes are structured, scaffolded, and outcomes-driven, but leave space for creative freedom and exploration. Whether it’s a student building a conservation sensor, prototyping a circular economy solution, or launching a passion project, Kōkiri empowers them to own their learning and see it through to meaningful completion.
Kōkiri — meaning to move forward with energy and purpose — reflects the spirit we aim to foster: young people who are curious, capable, and committed to shaping the world they’ll inherit.
Kōkiri AI Lab will launch in Whanganui in 2026, with future expansion to other communities under development. If you’re an educator, parent, or potential partner and would like to support this mission, we welcome your kōrero.
Let’s co-create the future — one purposeful project at a time.
